History

: Located in Pauillac in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France, Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most historic and prestigious wine estates and was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé (First Growth) in the official 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

The history of Lafite can be traced back to the 13th century, while the name “Lafite” is believed to derive from the Gascon term “La Hite,” referring to a hill or small rise. The estate began to establish its reputation for fine wine under the Ségur family in the 17th century and was subsequently recognized as one of the First Growths in the 1855 Classification, commissioned for the Exposition Universelle in Paris under Napoleon III.

In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate, beginning the relationship between Lafite and the Rothschild family that continues today. Over successive generations, the family has preserved the identity and heritage of the estate while continuing to develop its viticultural and winemaking practices.

The vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild cover approximately 112 hectares, comprising the slopes surrounding the Château, the Carruades Plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare parcel in neighboring Saint-Estèphe. The soils consist primarily of fine, deep gravel mixed with windblown sand over well-drained limestone subsoil. The principal grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

Alongside its long history, Château Lafite Rothschild places considerable emphasis on sustainability and the preservation of its surrounding ecosystem. The estate is transitioning toward organic farming and conducts research into massal selection, grape varieties, and adaptation to climate change. In December 2023, Château Lafite Rothschild joined the B Corp community.

About Wine

: Château Lafite Rothschild is the estate’s Grand Vin and one of the celebrated Premier Grand Cru Classé estates of Pauillac.

At the heart of Lafite’s identity are the deep gravel soils of Pauillac and a blend traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. While the exact proportions vary according to the vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon generally forms the majority of the blend, complemented by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Only grapes from vines over 10 years old are considered for the Grand Vin.

Fermentation takes place for approximately 15 days at a controlled temperature of 26–27°C. Each barrel is then tasted individually, and only the finest lots are selected for the final blend. Following blending, the wine is matured in new oak barrels for approximately 15 months.

Rather than emphasizing sheer power or concentration, Château Lafite Rothschild is particularly renowned for its precision, balance, elegance, freshness, and remarkable finesse. Its Cabernet Sauvignon-driven structure is expressed through finely textured tannins and exceptional aromatic complexity, while its restrained yet persistent character contributes to the wine’s extraordinary capacity for long-term ageing.

1995 Vintage

: 1995 was an excellent Bordeaux vintage, marked by a warm and dry summer that allowed the grapes to achieve excellent maturity. According to Château Lafite Rothschild, the particularly beautiful summer was comparable to those of 1989 and 1990, although with slightly less sunshine.

Rain arrived on September 7, but it was relatively light and concentrated over short periods. Rather than diluting the grapes, the rainfall provided welcome relief after the dry summer. Sunshine returned on September 17, allowing the grapes to continue their ripening under favorable conditions.

Château Lafite Rothschild 1995 was composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc, with an alcohol content of 13%. Following vinification and selection, the wine was matured in French oak barrels, including barrels produced by Lafite's own cooperage in Pauillac. After the final blend was assembled, the wine underwent approximately 20 additional months of barrel ageing, primarily in new oak.

Selection for the Grand Vin was particularly rigorous, with only around one-third of the harvest ultimately included in Château Lafite Rothschild. Robert Parker awarded the wine 95 points from Wine Advocate, describing the 1995 as less powerful and massive than the 1996, but exceptionally pure, precise and beautifully made.

The estate's own tasting note particularly highlights its complex nose with hints of cedar, developing roundness on the palate, and structured tannins that contribute to a remarkably long finish.

History

: 프랑스 보르도 메독(Médoc)의 포이약(Pauillac)에 자리한 Château Lafite Rothschild(샤토 라피트 로칠드)는 보르도를 대표하는 역사적인 와이너리이자, 1855년 보르도 공식 등급 분류에서 Premier Grand Cru Classé(1등급)로 지정된 샤토이다. 라피트가 와인 생산지로 기록에 등장한 역사는 13세기까지 거슬러 올라가며, ‘Lafite’라는 이름은 가스코뉴 방언으로 언덕 또는 작은 구릉을 뜻하는 ‘La Hite’에서 유래한 것으로 알려져 있다.

17세기 세귀르(Ségur) 가문을 거치며 본격적으로 명성을 쌓기 시작했으며, 1855년 나폴레옹 3세의 파리 만국박람회를 위해 실시된 보르도 와인 공식 등급 분류에서 1등급 샤토로 선정되었다. 이후 1868년 제임스 드 로칠드 남작(Baron James de Rothschild)이 샤토를 인수하면서 현재까지 이어지는 로칠드 가문과 라피트의 역사가 시작되었다. 오늘날에는 6대째 가문이 그 전통을 이어가고 있다.

라피트의 포도밭은 샤토 주변의 경사지와 서쪽의 카뤼아드 고원(Plateau des Carruades), 그리고 인접한 생테스테프(Saint-Estèphe)의 4.5ha 포도밭을 포함해 총 112ha 규모로 이루어져 있다. 깊고 미세한 자갈과 바람에 의해 운반된 모래, 그 아래 자리한 석회암 기반 토양은 뛰어난 배수 능력을 갖추고 있으며, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot를 재배한다.

오랜 역사와 명성에 머무르지 않고 포도밭의 지속가능성과 생태계 보존에도 적극적으로 투자하고 있다. 현재 유기농 재배로 전환하고 있으며, 기후변화에 대응하기 위한 품종 및 마살 셀렉션 연구와 생물다양성 보존 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 2023년 12월에는 B Corp 커뮤니티에도 합류했다.

: Château Lafite Rothschild는 포이약을 대표하는 Premier Grand Cru Classé이자 샤토의 최상위 와인인 Grand Vin이다.

라피트의 핵심은 포이약 특유의 깊은 자갈 토양과 Cabernet Sauvignon 중심의 블렌딩에 있다. 빈티지마다 품종 비율은 달라지지만 일반적으로 Cabernet Sauvignon이 가장 높은 비중을 차지하고, Merlot과 소량의 Petit Verdot 등이 더해진다. Grand Vin에는 수령 10년 이상의 포도나무에서 수확한 포도만 사용한다.

수확된 포도는 구획과 특성에 따라 양조되며, 발효는 26~27℃로 제어된 온도에서 약 15일간 진행된다. 이후 각각의 배럴을 개별적으로 테이스팅해 Grand Vin에 적합한 최상의 와인만을 선별하여 최종 블렌딩한다. 블렌딩 이후에는 새 오크 배럴에서 약 15개월간 숙성한다.

강렬한 힘을 앞세우기보다는 정교한 균형과 우아함, 섬세함, 신선함을 중요하게 여기는 것이 라피트의 스타일이다. 생산자 역시 자신들의 와인을 압도적인 힘보다는 균형과 정제된 표현, 그리고 ‘Grace’라는 단어로 설명한다. 빈티지가 가진 개성을 최대한 그대로 표현하기 위해 셀러에서의 개입을 최소화하는 양조 철학을 추구하고 있다.

1995 Vintage

: 1995년 보르도는 따뜻하고 건조한 여름 덕분에 포도가 안정적으로 성숙한 뛰어난 빈티지로 평가받는다. Château Lafite Rothschild의 공식 기록에 따르면, 1995년 여름은 1989년과 1990년에 견줄 만큼 매우 좋은 기후 조건을 보였으며, 일조량은 두 빈티지보다 다소 적었지만 전반적으로 건조한 날씨가 이어졌다.

9월 7일부터 비가 내리기 시작했지만 강수량이 많지 않았고 짧은 기간에 집중되었다. 여름 동안 건조한 환경에 놓여 있던 포도나무에는 오히려 필요한 수분을 공급하는 역할을 했으며, 포도의 풍미가 희석될 정도의 영향은 없었다. 이후 9월 17일부터 다시 맑은 날씨가 이어지면서 포도가 안정적으로 성숙할 수 있었다.

Château Lafite Rothschild 1995는 Cabernet Sauvignon 74%, Merlot 18%, Cabernet Franc 8%로 블렌딩되었으며 알코올 도수는 **13%**이다. 양조 후에는 프렌치 오크 배럴에서 숙성되었으며, 라피트가 직접 운영하는 포이약의 쿠퍼리지에서 제작한 배럴을 사용한다. 공식 자료에 따르면 최종 블렌딩 이후에도 약 20개월간 배럴 숙성이 이루어졌으며 대부분 새 오크를 사용했다.

특히 1995년에는 엄격한 선별이 이루어져 전체 수확량의 약 3분의 1 정도만 Grand Vin에 사용된 것으로 알려져 있다. Robert Parker는 이 와인에 Wine Advocate 95점을 부여했으며, 1996 빈티지만큼 강력하거나 육중하지는 않지만 순수하고 명확하게 표현된 전형적인 라피트의 특징을 높이 평가했다.
